Film and Television Institute of India
The Film and Television Industry in India is one of the largest in the world and is among the fastest growing sectors in the Indian economy. During the past two decades, the entertainment industry in India has experienced massive growth. The television industry alone has grown from a single state owned television network, Doordarshan in 1991, to over 300 national, regional and local channels being televised across the country. The Indian film making industry is the largest in the world in terms of ticket sales and produces on average, close to a thousand films a year in all languages, which is probably three times the amount that Hollywood produces. In India, television is the major constituent of the entertainment industry. Currently, India has the third largest television market in the whole world, second only to china and the USA. Today, television reaches about hundred million Indian households. The Indian film Industry is strongly supported by the large film-going Indian public, while Indian films which are commonly referred to as 'Bollywood Movies' and characterized by musicals, action, romance, comedy, and an increasing number of special effects, are increasingly gaining audience in the rest of the world too.
The presence of a vast audience for the popular film and television industry both in the country and internationally has led to the formation of a number of institutions providing training in film making and television program production among them being the well reputed The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). The Film and Television Institute of India was established in the year 1960 where its offices were first set in the Prabhat Studio premises in Pune after which it inherited a rich legacy of quality cinema production. The institution has lived to its fundamental objectives of providing the highest quality training in television program production and film making. On this day the Film and Television Institute of India is well recognized and is considered a Center of Excellence not only in India but also in the whole of Asia and Europe. Films produced by the institution's students are entered in film competitions and festivals both in India and abroad a situation which has seen majority of whom have won awards and accolades nationally and internationally.
Since its inception half a decade ago, the alumni of the institution have deeply penetrated the Indian film and television industry and are excelling in all areas in the Indian film industry. Examples of successful celebrities who have emerged from Indian film industry include; Subhash ghai, Nasiruddin Shah, mani Kaul, Jaya Bhaduri, Raza Murad, Shatrughan Sinha, Mithun Chakraborty, Tom Alter, Kanwarjit Paintal, Adoor Gopal Krishnan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Raj Kumar Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Resul Pookutty to mention but a few. The Film and Television Institute of India is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Broadcasting of the Government of India; its policies are formulated by a Governing council and the director of the institute is appointed by the Appointment Committee of Cabinet of the Government of India. The FTII is an established member of the CILECT (International Liaison Centre of Schools of Cinema and Television) which is an international association of film schools.
